Yorkshire – Stunning Views & Stunning Broadband Speeds!

Last week I was in Yorkshire – I spent a week near Harrogate and then a week in Austwick just below Ingleborough. Fantastic views, beautiful places. On one day we went to Malham and followed Malham Beck to its source at Malham Cove (or rather where it appears out of the ground). Yorkshire really has some absolutely stunning scenery.

But what really amazed me was the broadband speed in Austwick. I wanted to see if I would be able to use my Firestick or not – I have a 5 year old and a 10 year old… for my 5 year old My Little Pony is absolutely essential – so I ran speedtest on the wifi from my mobile – I got download speeds of over 300Mbps and uploads of well over 500Mbps… its dropped slightly when I took this screen shot later in the week:

It’s not easy to tell in advance of going whether you will get good broadband where you are on holiday and certainly in the middle of nowhere I didn’t expect such fast speeds. My guess is that Rural Broadband in Austwick has had a very positive effect…

Most of the time to look at Broadband availability (not speed) I head toward the Sam Knows website to their broadband checker. But in this instance it doesn’t reveal that the location has anything other than ADSL and FTTC:

The broadband was provided by B4RN who are “a professionally designed fibre optic broadband network, registered as a non-profit community benefit society” – so full KUDOS to them for achieving and delivering such fast speeds to people living in and visiting remote but beautiful places like Austwick. You can read more about them here. I don’t know why B4RN connectivity isn’t available on SamKnows at the moment – presumably it relies on an API…

Please don’t ask though which cottage I stayed in as I really wouldn’t recommend it – no small sharp knives, no dessert spoons, no measuring jug, the bins are full to overflowing… its not really been a great holiday cottage – except for the broadband and the scenery.
