Helping SDR Churches get the
most from its technology

The Client

SDR Churches is a benefice of churches within the Diocese of Derby, comprising the parishes of St. Michael & All Angels in Stanton-by-Dale, All Saints in Dale Abbey, and All Saints in Risley.

The churches serve their respective communities and the wider area, providing a full calendar of Church of England services, along with regular Bible teaching, a mix of contemporary and traditional music and a growing youth and children’s provision.

Local schools and community groups also use the churches for education and social activities.

The Challenge

AMDH Managing Director Andrew Horler and his family have known SDR Churches Rector Phil Selby for several years. Phil joined the benefice in 2019 and started working with Andrew on this project in spring 2020.

How about: At the time, the churches had minimal IT support, provided by a small group of volunteers with limited expertise.

Phil was looking to make the IT provision more robust across the three churches to enable them to deliver services more efficiently, which took on even more urgency during lockdown when services had to be delivered online.

He was looking for an IT solution that would enable users across the benefice to share documents safely, simply and securely, and for their data and devices to be cyber-secure, virus protected and backed up. He also wanted email addresses that matched the benefice’s new website URL, and ongoing support that users could call upon with any IT hiccups or issues.

The solution

AMDH developed a bespoke solution based on the latest Microsoft 365 for non-profits platform to help improve and futureproof IT provision across the benefice. 

We manage the benefice’s Microsoft 365 system and have put in place a robust system for protecting, sharing and backing up documents, something which was missing prior to us being appointed.

We also provide and manage the benefice email system, virus protection and cybersecurity, and technical support for four workstation devices, including the rector’s laptop. We’ve also provided training to help users get to grips with the new system and software and ongoing ad-hoc support so they can quickly report and resolve any issues. 


The impact

The platform and applications we’ve put in place, and the support we’ve provided, has enabled users across the benefice to begin to make the most of the new resources and systems – like OneDrive and SharePoint – that they’re using.

The benefice now has a secure and viable email system and a safe and secure way to share and collaborate on essential documents. This has given confidence to all users and helped free up some of Phil’s valuable time to better focus on providing high quality activities, well thought-out teaching, and working with his parishioners.

Crucially, we helped the churches access Microsoft 365’s suite of resources as a charitable organisation, which has ensured the solution is as cost-effective as possible and got its software and services up and running properly, something which would be a massive challenge for a church without some in-house ICT expertise.
