4 myths about Office 365 Security

If you are thinking about moving to Office 365 – or have thought about it and dismissed it because of concerns around security – check out the below myths that tend to block people migrating because of concerns around security.

  1. Once your data is in Office 365, Microsoft have full access to it all the time. FALSE. Microsoft use a solution they call “Lockbox” to prevent them having full access all the time – this requires a active support case to be in play and a manager to approve the access.

Read more about Lockbox on Microsoft’s website here – you can also read here about Customer Lockbox – the optional extra that places control more soundly in your hands.

  2. We’re not a target for Cyber Criminals – so don’t need to worry. FALSE. If you are a SMB or charity don’t think this doesn’t make you are target – someone could still attack your environment.

The UK Governments’s “Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2020” found that 46% of businesses and 26% of charities reported having a cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. This survey included small businesses / charities. You can look at this report here.

  3. Moving to cloud is going to make it more difficult for me to comply with GDPR and my security requirements. FALSE. There are tools in Office 365 that will make it potentially easier for you to comply – particularly ‘Secure Score’ and ‘Compliance Score’ that tell you what you need to do to improve your compliance.

You can read more about the tools available here.

  4. I already spend enough on cyber security. FALSE. Its not necessarily about how much you spend but what you are spending it on. You need to ensure you are buying appropriate defenses – security measures that adapt and change as the attacks you face change.

You can read more about this on the UK Government NCSC website here.
